Here’s some context that might surprise you: as sweeping as these shutoffs feel, Xcel has only called a region-wide PSPS in Colorado twice, ever. The utility has committed to a $1.85 billion wildfire mitigation plan running through 2027, which includes replacing bare power lines with insulated “tree wire,” inspecting roughly 50,000 utility poles, burying about 50 miles of the highest-risk lines underground, and installing more weather stations and AI-powered wildfire detection cameras across the state.
