When your home doesn’t have centralized air conditioning, window AC units are a great alternative. However, these units are not maintenance-free. To get them to work most optimally, you’ll need to clean them consistently.

Start With the Filter

One crucial component of your window AC unit that needs to be cleaned frequently is its filter. You should be washing your filter every month. After unplugging your air conditioner, you’ll need to remove the front panel and take out the filter. Use a vacuum to clear away any solid debris like dust and hair. You can wash the filter with warm soapy water to get rid of all the remaining debris. You must let your air filter completely dry before you reinstall it. Reinstalling the filter while it’s wet can create the perfect environment for mold and mildew growth when you turn your air conditioner back on.

Clean the Internal Components

Do an External Wash

With a mixture of water and a mild detergent, you’ll want to wipe down the exterior of your AC unit. This includes the grill as well as the top and sides of the unit. Make sure that you dry off your unit with a cloth, paying special attention to the small corners where the water can pool.
